We have rented 118 hectares from a local landowner for a period of 3 - 5 years. This land is only 1 mile from the College and the rotation will be included with Lackham’s own land.

This land will allow us to grow a wider range of crops but for the first year most will be down to Winter Wheat or Winter Barley. The cropping plan shows the hectares grown for each crop.

The permanent pasture occupies the land that is liable to flood or is too steep to incorporate into the normal temporary ley system. This land is used for beef and sheep paddocks and also for grazing with dairy replacements.

The loamy central area of the farm surrounding the dairy is farmed on an intensively managed grass ley system. The leys are based on a range of cultivars of perennial rye-grass from early to late heading, early and late cultivars of Timothy and large leaved white clovers. Grazing is intensive with nitrogen usage of about 350 kg Nitrogen per hectare per year. The leys are designed to last two to three years. Cereals or maize are integrated between the leys.

The short term leys, cereals, forage maize and brassica catch crops are grown mainly on the Biddestone Lane area of the farm and at Wick Farm.
