Each year the third year students on the National Diploma in Agriculture and the National Diploma in Farm mechanisation courses grow plots of cereals. The aim of the exercise is to further their understanding of agronomic decision-making, and to enhance their appreciation of the need for precision and accuracy in cereal growing.

The students work in groups of three and choose their own variety of cereal to grow. The basic decision-making is down to the individuals under guidance from their tutor. Seed rates are calculated according to thousand-grain weight of the seed, the percentage establishment expected, and the required plant population.

Each group will be involved in the application of future inputs from a practical aspect, which will further their education in correct settings and calibration of the necessary agricultural machinery.

The project will culminate in a written assignment from each group outlining the progress of their variety during the year and an estimate of the likely yield based on ear and grain numbers. They will also produce a fully costed gross margin for their plot. In addition individual students will undertake a viva with a visiting agronomist, as part of their final assessment in the crop production module.
