- The incidence of lameness is recorded and reported monthly at the
management meeting.
- Any cases must be accurately diagnosed and recorded. Treatment must
occur within 24 hours.
- An increase in number of cases must be investigated and the appropriate
measures instigated in order to alleviate the problem.
- Antibiotic footbaths are to be Instigated as soon as the incidence
of digital dermatitis rises. This commonly occurs soon after housing.
- Cows are allowed to walk at their own pace without the use of sticks
and goads in order that they can place their feet accurately.
- The breeding policy ensures that the cows have good conformation and
foot shape.
- The effect of the diet on lameness is considered when the ration is
formulated. This is reviewed monthly at the management meeting.
- All surfaces and buildings are evaluated in order to reduce the risk
of causing lameness.
- Feet are checked regularly and trimmed only if required. Trimming
will not be done at inappropriate times of the year.
The following will be considered for culling:
- Cows chronically affected with problems that a Veterinary Surgeon
considers to be incurable.
- Welfare concerns
- Problems with conformation that cannot be overcome.
