There should be a clear policy for protecting the herd against disease by having a plan for biosecurity. There should be precise instructions for the introduction of livestock from other herds or farms which pose a particular risk to the herd, and whose health may also require protection.

Any official herd health schemes may have specific requirements and these should be included in the plan.
The plan may refer to the isolation facilities and isolation policy in other sections of the HHP.

The written policy should specify:

Policy for selecting incoming livestock. The intention is to breed from high genetic merit cows in the herd removing the need to buy in.
Unused young bulls will be used for natural service
Isolation and quarantine
requirements for incoming livestock.
Incoming stock will be isolated for 4 weeks before introduction to the main herd.
Tests and examinations that should be performed prior to introduction of livestock.
None at present.
Vaccines and other medication to be given to incoming livestock.
Bovilis BVD™ and Leptavoid H™
Other biosecurity measures to be taken to protect against infectious
disease.
none

A barrier will be constructed from the office porch to the fence opposite.

No unauthorised vehicles will be allowed to pass this barrier.
Those authorised at present are Lackham farm vehicles, the milk tanker, feed lorries delivering to the parlour and those belonging to the farm staff if necessary. Others may be authorised by The Farm Manager as required.

A letter will be sent to all suppliers of materials and services explaining the Biosecurity Policy. Heavily contaminated vehicles will not be allowed in restricted areas.
Signs will be erected to explain restricted areas and availability of cleansing facilities.

A permanent wheel wash is in place to be used as required.

A foot wash/dip is provided it the barrier and the parlour entrance. An approved DEFRA disinfectant such as FAM 30™(Evans Vanodine International plc are the trade mark owners of FAM 30) will used and replenished regularly
