Cows' feet and locomotion are to be inspected and assessed by the stockman at specified time intervals. The control of lameness depends on the recognition of the disease and its causes. Stockman knowledge is essential. Stockmen should be aware of the basic lesions of the cow's foot and be able to recognise the common conditions and their causes. The recognition of lesions forms part of the recording requirement of the scheme.

Specific instructions and protocols for the control and prevention of lameness are shown in the health plan for lameness chart.

An action plan for the control of lameness is to be created at each review, based on the records that are available on the farm, and the experience and judgement of the attending veterinary surgeon, along with consultation with the farmer and stockman. The further incidence and prevalence of lameness will be monitored by the recording system and will demonstrate the effectiveness of the action plan.
