Tree planting

Only small scale planting of less than 0.25 hectares in the lowlands or 1 Ha in the uplands can be grant aided under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme.

Plants should be species native to the area, the species you may plant are listed in schedule 2.6. Plants can be transplants, whips or cell grown stock. Where appropriate, feathered trees may be used. Plant between November and March, but do not plant in waterlogged soils, or during periods of frost or drought.

Until the trees have become established they are to be kept clear of competitive weeds. This can be by using a suitable mulch, an appropriate herbicide or by hand-pulling. Strimming is not recommended as it is likely to damage trees.

All dead plants must be replaced in the following planting season and at the end of the agreement there must be a living plant for every plant grant aided.

Protection

Protective. fencing or individual guards will be required where it is necessary to prevent damage by livestock, deer, rabbits and other mammals. Spiral guards and tree shelters must be adequately supported and designed to last for five years and they must be checked regularly while protecting the tree and removed when the tree becomes established.
