FIELD No AREA CODE

Management of the land and the orchard trees is to be carried out in accordance with the orchard management plan to be prepared by Wiltshire College with the advice of an orchard specialist. The annual works shown below must be carried out in accordance with the plan. Associated capital works are shown at Schedule 4 to this Agreement.

ORCHARD TREE MANAGEMENT

Plant gaps in the orchard with traditional fruit tree varieties (as specified in the management plan) to produce standard trees which are evenly spaced and at a density of 150 trees per hectare. When planting new trees a mulch of well-rotted farmyard manure may be used, but must not extend beyond 1 metre from the base of the tree.

Trees must be protected from damage through bark stripping by grazing animals. Do not fasten any protection to the trees themselves.

Maintenance pruning of orchard fruit trees should take place every 1 - 5 years. Pruning should take place between February - May avoiding periods of very cold weather.
Pesticides may be applied to orchard fruit trees to control specific, recorded pests and diseases. The use of chemicals will be limited to the circumstances and criteria described in the management plan agreed in writing with DEFRA. Applications must be to orchard fruit trees only, and must comply with the regulations for the storage and use of chemicals and the protection of the environment current at the time. Full records must be kept in each instance of the problem, treatments applied and dates of application.
