In the first Agreement year sow a new 6m grass margin using at least five grasses selected from the following list at a seed rate of not more than 20 kilograms/hectare with no one species comprising more than 20% of the seed rate.

Seed Mix (clayl7oamy claylsilts)

Common Bent Agrostis capillaris
Meadow Foxtail Alopecuruspratensis
Sweet Vernal Grass Anthoxanthum odoratum
Crested Dog's tail Cynosurus cristatus
Sheep's Fescue Festuca ovina
Meadow Fescue Festuca pratensis
Red Fescue Festuca rubra
Smooth Meadow Grass Poa pratensis
Yellow Oat Grass Trisetum flavescens
Small leaved Timothy Phleumpratense (subspecies bertolonii)
Cocksfoot Dactylis glomerate
Timothy Phleum pratense

Margins which abut field boundaries (hedges, ditches, walls and hedgebanks) should be measured to start from the current ploughline.

During the first Agreement year new growth must be managed by cutting to control coarse vegetation and encourage tillering of grasses. Cut at least three times between 1 April and 31 October. All dense cuttings must be removed.

Once the margin is established mow the 3 metres next to the crop each year after mid July. All dense cuttings must be removed. Leave 3 metres uncut alongside the field edge to act as a refuge for wildlife. Once established this 3 m margin should be rotationally cut one year in three to prevent the encroachment of woody growth. All cuttings must be removed.

Treatments applied to adjacent arable land must not affect or encroach on the uncropped arable margin.

Margins should not be used for the storage of materials, be used as farm access tracks or be damaged by machinery or other means.

Where leys are part of the arable rotation, treatments applied to adjacent ley grassland must not affect the margin. If the field is grazed the margin need not be fenced but g must be controlled to prevent poaching or damage to the margin.
