This venture has been developed in conjunction with the British Limousin Cattle Society. In 1999 twenty pedigree maiden heifers were donated by the society, these originate from breeders all over the British Isles.
The aim of the project is to breed the heifers and monitor traits of the breed. This new enterprise will produce Pedigree offspring for replacements and sale.
The heifers born in 2001 were put to the bull in the autumn 2002, which with the four late calving cows will produce an autumn calving group in 2003.
Of the original bull calves one was sold and two kept for breeding; Lackham Shogun and Lackham Stewart. The remaining bulls were slaughtered for meat.
In 2002 the 19 heifers calved, 1 sadly died leaving 18 calves; 11 males
and 7 females, an average weight of 42.5 kg at birth.
The 2003 calving cows have produced 8 heifers and 5 bulls plus one bull
being stillborn.
The students are able to gain experience of working with the cattle monitoring their growth rates, condition scoring and learning to handle the cattle in preparation for showing.
